Kottan baskets are traditional hand woven baskets made in the south of India. The craft is extinct except for certain organizations working to preserve it.
Palmyra leaves are dried and cut into thin strips. These are then dyed in brilliant colours and dried again. The strips are used to weave the base of the basket, and gradually worked upwards. They are woven with wet hands and the base is tightly gripped with the feet, even as the palmyra strips are frequently moistened to prevent them from breaking.
Kottan products were awarded the UNESCO SEAL for excellence for handicrafts in 2004
